Stop searching. Just ask your terminal.

TuxAide lets you type a Linux question straight into the shell, in plain language, and answers right there — with an AI model on your own computer, and without ever running anything on its own.

A real terminal and a real model: a question and its command put on the prompt, a follow-up with a warning before deleting, a question in Portuguese, ? explaining a failed command, a typo fixed. No sound.

How it works

Write your question in the terminal as if it were a command:

$ how do I find files bigger than 100MB in this folder

╞═ 🐧 TuxAide (Ollama · qwen2.5-coder:7b) ═╡
To find files bigger than 100MB in the current folder, use find:

  [1] find . -type f -size +100M

1 put on prompt · c copy · Enter skip

Commands in the answer are numbered. Press 1 and it lands on your prompt, ready to edit — you press Enter. Normal commands (ls -la, git commit, sudo apt update), aliases and functions run exactly as before.

Why TuxAide

  • Made for people learning Linux — and anyone who doesn’t remember every flag. Ask where you already are instead of leaving the terminal to search.
  • No trigger word. No ask or hey in front: you type the question itself.
  • It never runs anything on its own. The command goes on your prompt and you decide. Destructive ones (rm -rf, dd, mkfs…) get a red warning and a confirmation first.
  • ? explains the last error. A command failed? Type ? and TuxAide reads the error and tells you the fix — asking before re-running anything that isn’t read-only.
  • Typos fixed instantly. gti status → git status, cd.. → cd .., without asking the model.
  • Answers from your man pages. With Smart RAG, questions about a command are answered from the documentation installed on your system, with the source cited.
  • Your language, your system. It answers in the language you wrote in, with commands for your system (dnf on Fedora, brew on macOS).
  • Local by default. A model on your machine through Ollama. No account, no API key, no telemetry. A remote backend is optional — and marked ☁ on every answer.

Install

One command installs everything: Ollama, a model that fits your RAM and the shell hook. It shows what it will do and asks once:

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/deltaxmodules/tuxaide/main/setup.sh | bash

Or from your package manager — brew install deltaxmodules/tap/tuxaide, pipx install tuxaide, or the PKGBUILD on Arch — then tuxaide setup. Open a new terminal and ask your first question.

Works on Linux (Ubuntu/Debian, Fedora/RHEL, Arch, Raspberry Pi) and macOS, with bash or zsh. The model is picked for your RAM: 8 GB or more gives the best answers, smaller machines get a lighter model.
